Choosing the wrong sunglasses with the wrong frame shape can be disastrous, particularly if you need to wear your glasses a lot. Sunglasses are an investment in eye protectionand style; offering a vital accessory that should be picked and purchased wisely.

For the best recommendations, choose which of these descriptions most closely fits your face shape. If in doubt, you can stand in front of a mirror and draw an outline of your face with a wipe clean marker pen – or lipstick.

The Oval Face

Most of your features are in proportion and in balance. Your chin might be slightly narrower than your forehead whilst your cheekbones may be quite high. This means that you need to stay away from frames that are too large, but you’re lucky as most other frames will look great. In particular square, rectangular and geometric shapes are best as the sharper angles enhance your softer curves.

The Square Face

If you have an angular face with a strong jaw line, broad forehead and square chin, then you most probably have a square face. The length and width should be in proportion, and the frames to look out for are oval and rounded shapes. Sunglasses with temples (the arms at each side of the frame) that are centre set or that connect at the top of the frame are also winners. You’ll also be pleased to know that butterfly shaped glasses are made for you.

The ones to avoid are geometric and square shaped frames that will highlight your angular face. Low set temples or bright colour accents on the bottom of your frames will draw attention to your chin, so these are also a big no-no if you’re trying to draw attention away from it.

The Heart-shaped Face

If your face has a broad forehead, wide cheek bones and a small chin, then you have a heart-shaped face. When you choose your glasses we recommend that you stick with either bottom-heavy frames that add width to the lower half of your face or go for a style with low set temples to draw the eyes downwards. Narrow or round frames can also soften the face.

Try to avoid any top heavy styles that draw attention upwards and avoid decorative temples too.

The Round Shaped Face

If your cheeks are full and your chin is round, then you have a round face. As the width and the length of your face are in the same proportion, you will want to wear sunglasses that slim your cheeks. Both rectangular and wider styles make faces appear longer and thinner, as will frames that connect at the top of the temple. However, you will want to avoid small or short frames that will accentuate the roundness of your face.
