From the sunglasses you’ll never lose to shades that correct colour blindness, here are five innovations that prove sunglasses aren’t just about looking cool – they can make your life better too!

1. Sunglasses you'll never lose

You remember your favourite pair of sunglasses, don’t you? Of course, the operative word in that question is remember. Because as sure as day follows night, the more you like a pair of sunglasses, the more likely you are to leave them somewhere never to be seen again.

In a bid to put an end to this once and for all, the Japanese manufacturer Tzukuri has created a pair of sunglasses you can’t lose. If you inadvertently try and make an orphan of these new pair of hi-tech shades, a solar powered Bluetooth Low Energy Beacon sealed inside the frame will send a message to an app on your iPhone.

Conversely, if you’re the kind of person who is more likely to lose their phone, you’ll be interested to hear the app works the other way around too. So, when you wonder off wearing these shades and your iPhone starts to suffer with detachment anxiety, it’ll sound out a loud alert to remind you to pick it up.

2. Sunglasses that give you 'Instagram vision'

People’s lives just look better on social media, don’t they? If you’re failing to keep up with the Joneses across your favourite platforms, then that could be the reason. Or, perhaps more likely, it’s down to the fact that most people feel compelled to put every picture through a filter before it’sthought fit for public consumption.

Now, however, you can buy a pair of sunglasses that will help you see life through the rose-tinted reality you’ve become accustomed to seeing daily on your Instagram timeline. Not only that, but the sunglasses manufactured by Ten promise ‘to make your day look ten times better’. And surely that’s something we could all benefit from, no?

3. Sunglasses that provide blue light protection

Everyone knows that sunglasses help protect your eyes from the damaging effects of ultra-violet light. However, in recent years, a growing body of evidence now suggests that visible short-wave radiation – also known as blue light – is equally, if not more, damaging.

Natural daylight actually counteracts the harmful effects of blue light. However, the huge number of mobile devices, computer screens and TVs that now omit large amounts of blue light is creating major concerns regarding universal levels of eye health. As such, Prisma have manufactured sunglasses that concentrate on protecting your eyes from harmful blue light radiation.

4. Sunglasses that monitor heart rate

Do you wish your favourite pair of sports sunglasses could give you more? If so, you might be interested to hear a company in Canada have developed a Head Up Display (HUD) that can be mounted to any pair of sunglasses you own.

The clip-on device, catchily entitled Sportiiiis, works by receiving performance data from paired devices, such as heart rate monitors, and then feeding the information back to you via LEDs that sit under your eye. The Sportiiiis’ readout is purposefully simple, however if you require more detailed information, you can tap the clip-on unit and it will provide you with audio updates through an attached speaker.

5. Sunglasses that correct colour blindness

Did you know that over 300 million people worldwide suffer from colour blindness? Well, now the scientist Don McPherson has accidently createdEnchroma sunglasses that are helping people discover a vast range of colours.

By using rare earth iron to absorb huge amounts of light, the sunglasses were originally designed to help surgeons differentiate between blood and tissue during procedures. However after a colour blind friend borrowed McPherson’s sunglasses during a game of Frisbee – and then saw the colour orange for the first time – he started to realise they could fulfil a wider purpose too.
